"Same Size Shoes" - The Story Behind the Song
SAME SIZE SHOES
This song is going to be misunderstood by many.
The lyrics were not in anyway meant to minimize the seriousness of depression or anxiety. Quite the opposite actually. They were meant to call out those who glom onto or hide behind an illness they don’t have because it’s easier to say they’re depressed than to get out of bed for work or school. I have a friend that struggles with depression and it’s not a joke. I’ve seen the bottom and it doesn’t look like laziness. Not wanting to get out of bed and not being able to get out of bed are two different things.
Everyone has problems and to them they’re meaningful, but everyone’s problems are different and some aren’t made up.
This entire song is a message from the generation above yours and written from that perspective The last generation is always looking at and analyzing your behavior and usually annoyed with it.
All 3 verses in this song are meant to be cynical.
This is evident in the first line of the first verse…
“You like your father but he doesn’t know you” This is what some teenage poser would say about their father. A man who takes time out of his work day to coach his son’s soccer team even though he’s never played soccer. A man who has been saving for his son’s education since before he was born. A man who drives to a 24hr pharmacy at 2 in the morning because his son has an allergic reaction to something.
Your father know you just fine. Stop trying to find problems just to fit in.
The chorus is a continuation of the cynicism. Think of the first two lines as your parents laughing at you for wanting to quit your first minimum wage job because you think too many taxes are being taken out of your pay check (which goes to pay nothing by the way) Think of the last two lines as you parents being sympathetic to your frustration, and again, wanting to share their own experiences to help you understand what it takes to have a family.
The bridge is the real teaching moment in this song. everyone has problems but some are more serious than others. In most cases if you put your problems into a pile with everyone else’s and were then asked to choose one, you would likely just take your own problem back.
Song Art and Lyrics Below:

SAME SIZES SHOES
You like your Father but he doesn’t know you
You like your mother but she’ll never ever do
You like your brother but he’s in his own world
You like your sister but she’s got her own girl
Take a walk in your shoes what have I got to lose
No one’s got time for you that’s yesterday’s news
Yea your problems seem meaningful
We don’t all wear the same size shoes
You like your job but it doesn’t get you anywhere
You like your room but it’s quiet and that’s a fear
You like your dog but he worries me every day
You like your car cause it takes me so far away
Take a walk in your shoes what have I got to lose
No one’s got time for you that’s yesterday’s news
Yea your problems seem meaningful
We don’t all wear the same size shoes
Don’t say it’s mental health
Cause that’s the easy way out
Why do that to yourself
Don’t blame the world were in
For all your laziness
All you need are shoes that fit
You like the turbulence cause that’s how its always been
You like your friends but they doing their own thing
You like your mind but here we go again
You like your life but you wouldn’t care if it ends
Take a walk in your shoes what have I got to lose
No one’s got time for you that’s yesterday’s news
Yea your problems feels so meaningful
Cause we don’t all wear the same size shoes
The same size shoes
Same size shoes
Hey where’d ya get your shoes
Hey didn’t I buy you those shoes
