"Heartbreak" - The Story Behind the Song
HEARTBREAK
This song is about the pain felt in a relationship when someone complicates things with immature nonsense.
In true FOURTOLD fashion, I wrote the first verse of this song first. Uncharacteristically that’s as much as I could come up with for months. I had a few loose ideas about who would say something like that and why but nothing really worked itself out until I combine it with the first verse of a totally different song.
This story can be told from the perspective of a man or woman and is written as a message to their partners.
The 2 verse, pre-chorus song structure makes the story easy to tell.
The 1st verse is a complaint about day-to-day life together.
(I don’t appreciate the mind games)
The second verse is a threat that there will be consequences if behavior doesn’t change.
(You’re gonna loose everything you worked for)
The pre-chorus is questioning their love.
(I don’t know if you’re into me)
The chorus in this song is sad, droning, and whiny which I think echos the sentiments of headache well.
This pattern is repeated in the second half of the song.
(I can’t communicate)
(I don’t think you want the answers)
(try to send some love my way)
There’s an unusual bridge placement at the end of this song
which lyrically is a reminder of better days. A last attempt to
save a relationship that wasn’t really there in the first place.
(We used to dance around in the rain)
Song Art and Lyrics Below:

Heartbreak
Heartbreak
I don't appreciate
The mind games
For heaven sake
You got me runnin around in circles
There isn't a second I'm free
You're gonna lose everything you work for
And one of those things is me
I need to feel your arms around me
I don't know if its what you see
You never say anything about it
And don't know if you're into me
(Chorus)
And my heart aches
You don't feel the same
My heart aches
Deep inside of me
Daybreak
I can't communicate
This Manic State
For heaven sake
When we talk it's always in circles
We never make any head way
I don't think you want the answer
Cause you'll just go your own way
I need to know if you feel the same
Take my hand and walk with me
Try to send some love my way
And make my bad thoughts go away
(chorus)
(chorus)
woahhhh I remember the days
We use to dance around in the rain
No one could ever get in our way
Today is not that day
(chorus)
(chorus)
